WHat are Jur's publication policies?

Review Process

Faculty, graduate, and undergraduate referees review submission and recommend a course of action for the work. All submissions are read by a member of the editorial staff; only those that seem likely to meet the standards of JUR are sent to referees in order to save time for authors and referees. Keep in mind the following:

  • All submissions must not be under consideration, in part or in whole, by any other publication, nor should the work have already been published in any citable form.

  • Submission to JUR implies that all authors have read and agreed to its content and that any experimental research reported in the manuscript has been performed with the approval of an appropriate ethics committee.

  • Research carried out on human subjects must comply with the 2009 Helsinki Declaration.

  • Internationally recognized guidelines must be followed for any research involving animals.

  • The methods section of the work must include a statement indicating the name of the body that gave ethical approval, with a reference number if appropriate.

IRB/IACUC Approval

JUR’s IRB/IACUC policy was developed based on University of California San Francisco’s Human Research Protection Program according to guidelines established by the Department of Health and Human Services.

  • IRB approval is required for all research involving human subjects.

  • IACUC approval is required for all research involving animal subjects.

  • “Research” is defined as a systematic investigation that collects quantitative data, qualitative data, and/or biological specimens with the intention of analyzing those data/specimens to answer a question. These data can be obtained through intervention (i.e. manipulation of a subject’s environment) or interaction (i.e. interpersonal communication).

    • Research does not include journalistic activities.

    • A common example for prospective JUR authors is regarding interviews. If an interview is conducted as a primary source, with interviewee approval, this does not require IRB approval. If an interview is conducted to generate data and contribute to generalizable knowledge, this does require IRB approval.

If your research requires IRB/IACUC, please include the approval number and approving institution/board in the manuscript’s text as well as the Permission to Publish form.

Selection

We continually accept and publish individual articles in an online PDF format, which are eventually compiled into a single volume of the Journal. In the spring, we showcase a select number of these articles in a printed version. Because of printing costs, not all published works will appear in entirety in the print version; however, we will acknowledge authors published online only by including abstracts or excerpts of their work with a link to our website where readers can view full versions of all articles. All authors, featured in both web and print versions, will receive a complimentary copy of the Journal. This policy allows us to publish your work more quickly and in a more accessible format to share with family and friends.

JUR reserves the right to reject submitted work at any time during the review process.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE MY WORK?

Writing quality

  • Please be as concise as possible, valuing clarity over breadth. We accept submissions with a maximum of 30 pages due to printing limitations. For scientific research submissions, there is a page minimum of 10 pages double spaced, as we feel that is the necessary length to reach the depth of research we are looking for. This minimum does not apply to creative works.

  • Be very attentive to detail regarding grammar, language, and syntax.

Content and novelty

  • We look for original, outstanding work that is of interest and impact to the JUR audience.

  • Accepted work will contribute meaningfully to the undergraduate knowledge base.

Style

  • We only accept work in English and Spanish.

  • Capitalize only the first word and proper nouns in the title (rule does not apply to creative work).

  • Ensure that all Greek letters and special characters are properly embedded.

Submissions Format

  • Submissions must not be a protected file format; submission must be sent in a .doc or .docx format.

Figures, Tables, and Images Format

  • All color must be in cmyk.

  • Tables, figures, and images should be .jpg, .pdf, or .gif formats.

  • Please position tables/figures/images in the document as submitted and attach PDF documents.

  • For each figure there should be a figure number indicating the sequence of the figures, a short title for the figure (15 words max), and a description of the figure or photograph (300 word max).

  • It is the responsibility of the author(s) to obtain permission from the copyright holder to reproduce figures, tables, or photographs that have been previously published.

Citations and References Format

Plagiarism and libel

  • Any work containing plagiarized, defamatory, or libelous content will be formally rejected from publication.

  • Submitted material must not infringe existing copyrights or the rights of a third party.

  • Guidelines regarding plagiarism can be found here.

  • Research our journal – spend time reviewing our past publications and be familiar with all of our policies.

  • We encourage you to ask your colleagues, supervisors, and/or peers to read your work before you submit.
